ACAMPROSATE

Clinical Indication

Alcohol dependence

Comments

There is currently no commissioned service within general practice to support the prescribing and ongoing management of this treatment. There are, though, potential clinical benefits in the maintenance of abstinence from alcohol (and these patients are likely to have been discharged from specialist services as they are no longer drinking alcohol), so where a clinician has the appropriate expertise and feels clinically competent to do so, they may choose to prescribe. However, there is no contractual requirement or expectation for GPs to initiate or continue prescribing, and practices are not obligated to issue these prescriptions.
